Congress Overrides Obama

A couple weeks ago, Obama vetoed a bill that would have allowed the families of September 11th victims to be able to sue the Saudi Arabian government for their actions and support of the attacks on the twin towers. Obama was upset with this, but clearly the House and Senate had their minds made up with an overwhelming 348-77 and 97-1 vote result respectively. The lawsuits would freeze Saudi Arabian assets that are here in the US in order to pay damages. Saudi Arabian officials responded by saying they may be forced to sell off investments within the United States to avoid them having to pay for such court rulings. While the the result of this new law has good intentions, and it feels good to see this victims win, losing Saudi Arabian holdings here in the US could have a negative impact on the economy, and it seems like Saudi Arabia could weasel their way out of paying anything in damages. There is also controversy that the actions of the House and Senate voting could have been a "PR" move with elections coming up in just a month. The general public wants to see the families of 9/11 victims be supported by the government, so the "reaching for votes" argument would make sense as well. In the end, I simply hope that these families get the help that they have been seeking for 15 years.
