A large proportionate of the homeless population is made up of disabled individuals, all of which have trouble applying for residency in shelters or subsidized apartments. However when a member does manage to claim residency, most shelters do not have proper accommodations for disabilities, violating the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990. Several agencies such as the Legal Aid Society and the Department of Social Services are working to reform the shelter system in nondiscriminatory practices for people with disabilities.
